Issue No. 1 - Why We Begin

Human vision.

AI Acceleration.

The future of work will be designed by those who lead with both.

Each issue of The Human Advantage unpacks how technology reshapes creativity, learning, and community—and how we can grow stronger, together.

The story behind this work

When I first started learning about AI, I didn’t expect it to change how I saw history, health, or even family.

But the more I studied, the more I realized this: technology alone will never fix what history broke.

COVID didn’t create new problems for the Black community—it exposed ones that were already there. Generations of stress, hard work, and limited access to health care and opportunity shaped our DNA, our neighborhoods, and the paths open to us.

If we want a fair future, we can’t start the story at “today.” We have to look back—see how we got here, and then build tools that meet people where they are, not the other way around.

That’s what this newsletter is about: bringing AI education, access, and possibility to our community—not waiting for the world to bring us in.

AI isn’t new, but what’s happening now is different.

In the past, you had to ask a chatbot for help.

Now, AI systems can act—they can plan steps, use tools, and finish tasks. This new kind of technology is called agentic AI, and it’s already changing daily work.

When you see companies like Canva, Notion, Stripe, and Salesforce rebuild their platforms around AI, you’re seeing the early design of tomorrow’s workday.

The question is no longer “Will AI replace us?”

The question is “How do we stay in the driver’s seat?”

that have inspired me to study the evolution of agentic AI.

Canva Create — “Human-Machine Collaboration: Agents, Assistants, and Workflows That Work Harder”

Presented by Fast Company. A candid panel featuring leaders from Canva, Slack, and the developer community on how AI will surround—not replace—the worker. Real talk about collaboration, creativity, and what “working smarter” will truly mean.

Stripe Sessions — “The Future of Commerce”

The shopping cart just got smarter. Stripe’s new Order Intent API shows how agentic AI can understand what customers want, build carts automatically, and personalize every step of the buying experience—empowering creators, small businesses, and major retailers alike to craft seamless checkout journeys for their audiences.

Make with Notion — “Your New AI Team”

Work smarter, with new AI-powered teammates. Notion unveils updates that turn your company’s workspace into a living encyclopedia of context. New agents, plus AI search and research modes, connect across tools like Google Workspace to surface insights, build reports, and turbocharge the quality of first drafts and team ideas—while empowering your human workforce to ship work faster than ever.

Dreamforce — “AI at Enterprise Scale”

From pilot to powerhouse. Salesforce spotlighted the power of humans and technology working together—not as a possibility, but as an inevitability already reshaping the workplace. Get a glimpse of what happens when AI becomes part of every workflow—from sales to service to the C-suite—backed by case studies from global enterprises proving how AI agents are now actively supporting their human workforce across industries.

Humans still make the difference

AI can write, sort, and automate—but it can’t care.

It can’t hold the full story of a community or feel the weight of a decision.

That’s why the people who will do best in the years ahead are those who learn how to guide AI, not fear it.

Examples:

A leader uses AI to summarize client notes, then spends her saved time listening deeper.

A consultant drafts ideas with AI, then rewrites every line in her own voice.

A student learning with neurodiversity leverages AI to capture, organize, and structure their thinking to perform the cognitive processing tasks required to complete their work.

“AI gives us speed. We bring the meaning.”

A quick look at policy

In January 2025, the U.S. government shifted from heavy rules about “safe and secure AI” to a new focus on driving “American leadership in AI innovation.”

This means reduced regulatory barriers, faster development and shipping.

We can’t afford to sit on the sidelines.

For Black families and communities, learning how to use these tools is a path to power—economic, creative, and educational.

Family micro-project: “Future Builders”

This idea grew from my time in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s futurism series. It helped me zoom out, imagine new paths, and then come back with simple steps. If you want that spark, jump in and experience futurism for yourself!

Watch the Unscripted Series

Let’s keep the first project simple—and fun. Do it solo, with kids, or as a small group.

Step 1: Imagine the future.

Parents: picture the work or impact you want next.

Kids: imagine what you want to build or who you want to be.

Step 2: Make the image.

Use an AI art tool (Canva Magic Studio, Leonardo, or another safe option) to create a picture of that dream—either you doing it, or the project itself.

Step 3: Share and reflect.

Print or post it where you’ll see it. Talk for two minutes:

What did the human add?

Where did AI help?

What’s one small step we can take this week?

This is a light first step into co-creating with technology—learning by imagining together.

Looking ahead

In every issue, we’ll explore how AI is reshaping work, learning, and daily life—and how we can guide it toward justice, creativity, and care.

Before you go, I’d love your support in building the most meaningful content for you.
