Building Skills to Lead the Work Ahead.

Issue No. 12 - The experience shaping the future of AI is already here

A Note From Rafat

Rafat here!

We know our businesses, our communities, and the problems worth solving. As AI changes how work gets done, that experience should help shape the priorities, investments, and decisions behind the technology.

For Black professionals, the opportunity extends from learning new tools to designing solutions and leading the work. Organizations have a role to play: invest in the people already on their teams, and build partnerships that connect community talent with paid experience and opportunities to advance.

This month, I’m bringing that conversation together with two practical ways to act: find people and opportunities through H.E.A.L., and begin documenting the impact of your work before year-end review season.

FEATURE STORY

Organizations Need Our Experience to Win With AI

In the final installment of my AI history and adoption series, I explore how Black experience can inform the work organizations need to do next.

Someone who knows where a process fails can help define better requirements. Someone who recognizes a community’s needs can help a team test whether its solution works for the people it is meant to serve. That knowledge deserves technical support, investment, and a route into decisions.

The article offers practical starting points: guided build-alongs around real business challenges, partnerships with community organizations, and paid projects that help people build skills and take on greater responsibility.

RESOURCE SPOTLIGHT

Find your people. Do great work together.

I’m introducing H.E.A.L., the Health Equity Advocacy League, a free hub sponsored by Powered to Rise. It brings together people across healthcare, fitness, policy, technology, and community work to improve health outcomes, with Black population health at the center. Everyone who shares that commitment is welcome.

Find a role, a speaking opportunity, an event, or someone whose gifts complement your own. Explore the policy priorities shaping health and opportunity. This is a place to connect around the work that lights you up.

THIS MONTH’S PROJECT

You’ve done the hard work. Let’s get your impact on the record.

Make space to reflect on the work you delivered. AI-generated illustrative mockup of the performance-review resource.

When you spend your days helping others succeed, a blank performance-review page can feel like one more thing on an already full list. You don’t have to start with polished language. Start with a conversation about the work you’ve done.

Our performance-review guide helps you turn those reflections into a clear account of the decisions you made, the actions you took, and the difference your leadership made possible. Keep leading in “we.” Document your impact in “I.”

Inside Chef’s Pantry, choose your path: use the Word and Excel templates if your organization allows downloads, or use the copy-and-paste prompts to build within its approved environment. Editable Word guides give you a desk checklist and space for notes, and you can listen along with me as you go.

Build Anatomy shows you how to adapt the workflow to your needs while you direct the AI and guide its output. Keep work information inside your organization’s approved environment.

Start with one project. Talk through what happened.

Choose one next step this month: share H.E.A.L. with someone who can help create opportunity, or document one example of your impact.

The intelligent workforce taking shape in this modern industrial revolution needs your experience at the table.
